Maps are an indispensable form of information display. Until recently, maps were exclusively designed and constructed to be printed on paper. The printing of maps on paper was economical, and this facilitated their distribution. However, paper maps may not represent the best way to convey information. Computers have been used for many years to assist the cartographer in making maps on paper. Nowadays the computer is being used directly for the display of maps.
